If you’re hoping to replace missing upper back teeth with dental implants but have been told there isn’t enough bone height beneath your sinus, a sinus lift can make implants possible. Using 3D CBCT imaging and gentle techniques, our doctors safely add bone support in the upper jaw so your new implants stay strong and secure for years to come.

Oral Surgery in Everett

What is a sinus lift (sinus augmentation)?

Your maxillary sinuses are air-filled cavities located behind your cheeks, directly above your upper back teeth. When natural upper molars or premolars are removed, the ridge of bone that once supported them naturally melts away over time. Without intervention, there may only be a paper-thin layer of bone separating your mouth from your sinus cavity—far too little bone to safely anchor a titanium dental implant post.

Precision access

Sinus Lift 3D CBCT precision access in Everett

Using high-definition 3D CBCT digital imaging, our surgical team maps your sinus anatomy with sub-millimeter precision and creates a microscopic opening in the upper jawbone near the missing tooth site.

Elevating the membrane

Elevating the sinus membrane in Everett

The delicate membrane lining the maxillary sinus cavity (the Schneiderian membrane) is gently elevated upward, creating a protected space between your upper jawbone and the sinus floor.

Placing the graft material

Placing biocompatible bone graft material in Everett

Specialized biocompatible bone grafting material is meticulously placed into the newly created space beneath the raised sinus membrane to build up essential bone height.

Natural bone regeneration

Natural bone integration for dental implants in Everett

Over the next several months, your body naturally integrates the graft material, transforming it into strong, dense living bone that safely houses permanent dental implants.

Comfortable sinus lift surgery with sedation in Everett
Patient Comfort & Safety

Relaxing, anxiety-free surgery with sedation dentistry

We recognize that any procedure involving the sinuses can sound intimidating to patients. At Sunrise Dental Everett, your comfort and peace of mind are our highest priority.

To ensure your surgical visit is entirely stress-free, we provide a full spectrum of comfortable sedation dentistry options—including soothing nitrous oxide (laughing gas), oral conscious sedation, and deep IV sedation. Deeper sedation options allow you to drift into a peaceful, sleep-like state. You will feel zero pain, experience no pressure or anxiety, and wake up comfortably with little to no memory of the surgery.

Why might you need a sinus lift?

Our surgical team in Everett evaluates your upper jaw architecture with 3D CBCT imaging during your implant consultation. A sinus lift is commonly recommended if you experience any of the following.

Long-Term Loss of Upper Back Teeth

Missing upper molars or premolars leads to progressive bone resorption, causing the sinus floor to expand downward into the space formerly occupied by tooth roots.

Naturally Large Sinus Cavities

Some individuals naturally have larger maxillary sinus cavities or thin alveolar ridges, requiring supplementary bone height before dental implants can be anchored.

Bone Loss from Periodontal Disease

Advanced periodontal disease can erode the supporting bone structure around upper teeth before or after extraction, leaving insufficient bone volume for implant stability.

Frequently asked questions

Answers to sinus lift questions

What is a sinus lift and why is it needed for dental implants?
A sinus lift—also known as sinus augmentation—is a specialized oral surgical procedure that adds bone height to the upper posterior jaw (maxilla). The maxillary sinuses sit directly above your upper back molars and premolars. When these teeth are lost or extracted, the bone quickly shrinks and the sinus cavity expands downward, leaving inadequate bone height to securely anchor a dental implant. A sinus lift gently elevates the sinus membrane and places bone grafting material underneath, creating the necessary vertical bone volume to anchor dental implants solidly and permanently.
What is the difference between a lateral window and a crestal sinus lift?
There are two primary techniques for sinus lifts, chosen based on the amount of existing natural bone: the crestal (vertical) approach and the lateral window approach. When a patient has moderate existing bone (typically 4–6 mm), a less invasive crestal sinus lift can be performed through the implant socket itself, and implants can often be placed simultaneously. When significant bone loss has occurred (less than 4 mm of remaining bone), a lateral window sinus lift is performed by accessing the sinus through a small window on the side of the upper jaw. Our surgical team uses 3D CBCT imaging to determine the safest, most conservative technique for your anatomy.
Will I feel any pain or discomfort during a sinus lift?
No, you will not feel pain during your sinus lift procedure. We administer profound local anesthesia to ensure the entire upper jaw area is completely numb. In addition, because sinus procedures can cause apprehension, we offer comfortable sedation options—including nitrous oxide, oral conscious sedation, and IV sedation. With deeper sedation options, you will be in a state of deep, dream-like relaxation, feel zero pain or surgical pressure, and wake up comfortably with little to no memory of the surgery.
Can dental implants be placed at the same time as a sinus lift?
In many cases, yes! If there is sufficient residual bone height (typically at least 4 to 5 mm) to provide primary mechanical stability for the implant post, we can perform the sinus lift and place the dental implant in a single visit. However, if your existing bone is very thin (less than 4 mm), we usually perform the sinus lift first as a staged procedure, allowing the bone graft to mature for 4 to 6 months before placing your implants. This staged approach ensures the highest long-term success rate for your restorations.
What special precautions should I follow after sinus lift surgery?
Protecting the healing sinus membrane is crucial following surgery. For the first two weeks, you must avoid blowing your nose, sneezing with a closed mouth (always sneeze with your mouth open to avoid sinus pressure spikes), drinking through straws, smoking, or flying in an airplane. We will prescribe a decongestant, an antimicrobial mouth rinse, and antibiotics to keep your sinuses clear and free from infection. Mild swelling and occasional minor nasal bleeding can occur during the first 48 hours and are completely normal.
Does dental insurance cover sinus lift surgery and can I finance it?
Coverage varies depending on your individual dental insurance policy. Many plans offer partial coverage under major surgical or periodontal benefits, while others classify sinus augmentation as an elective preparatory procedure. Our knowledgeable insurance coordinators will verify your benefits in advance and submit detailed clinical documentation with 3D CBCT scans to maximize your insurance reimbursement. To ensure treatment fits comfortably within your monthly budget, we offer flexible monthly financing through CareCredit®.
