As dentists, our first goal is always to save your natural teeth whenever we can. However, when a tooth is too badly damaged or decayed to repair, a gentle extraction is often the best way to stop pain, clear up infection, and protect the rest of your smile—and we make sure you stay completely numb and relaxed the entire time.

Oral Surgery in Everett

Simple vs. surgical teeth extractions

Depending on the condition and position of your tooth, our doctors perform two types of extractions:

Simple tooth extraction

Simple tooth extraction in Everett

A simple extraction is performed on a tooth that is visibly above the gumline. After thoroughly numbing the surrounding tooth and gum tissue with gentle local anesthesia (with optional nitrous oxide or IV sedation for complete relaxation), our doctors use specialized, atraumatic instruments to carefully loosen the tooth and lift it out intact. Simple extractions are quick, straightforward, and involve minimal recovery time.

Surgical (impacted) tooth extraction

Surgical tooth extraction in Everett

A surgical extraction is necessary if a tooth has broken off at the gumline, has complex curved roots, or has not fully erupted through the gums. Our surgical team creates a tiny, precise incision in the gum tissue to gently access and remove the tooth structure, often performing socket bone grafting at the same time to preserve your jawbone contour for future dental implants.

When are teeth extractions necessary?

  • Severe Tooth Decay & Infection: Decay that has extended deep beneath the gumline or compromised structural integrity beyond what a root canal or crown can save.
  • Vertical Root Fractures: Deep structural cracks extending into the tooth root beneath the bone level that make tooth preservation impossible.
  • Advanced Periodontal (Gum) Disease: Severe bone loss surrounding a tooth root, causing excessive looseness and chronic recurring infections.
  • Orthodontic Crowding or Implant Preparation: Removing non-restorable or problematic teeth to prepare your dental arches for comprehensive orthodontic alignment, full-arch restorations, or dental implants.

Replacing your extracted teeth: comprehensive restoration options

Extracting a damaged tooth is only the first step in restoring your smile's long-term health and function. Leaving an open gap allows adjacent teeth to drift, tilt, and shift out of alignment, causing bite collapse and jawbone shrinkage over time.

At Sunrise Dental Everett, our surgical and restorative team seamlessly coordinates your extractions with customized tooth replacement solutions so you can enjoy a complete, healthy, and natural-looking smile.

Immediate Single Dental Implants

In many cases, our doctors can extract the compromised tooth, place a socket bone graft, and insert a permanent titanium dental implant all within a single visit.

Custom Crowns, Bridges & Dentures

Using digital 3D impressions and advanced restorative planning, our doctors design precision temporary and permanent prosthetics—including custom porcelain and zirconia restorations, dental bridges, and custom dentures—so you can smile with confidence.

Frequently asked questions

Answers to teeth extraction questions

Will my tooth extraction hurt, and what sedation options are available?
At Sunrise Dental Everett, your physical and emotional comfort is our top priority. Before beginning, we thoroughly numb the extraction site with modern, gentle local anesthesia so you will feel no sharp pain whatsoever—only light touch and gentle pressure. For patients experiencing dental anxiety or undergoing surgical extractions, we offer multiple levels of comfortable sedation: nitrous oxide (laughing gas), oral conscious sedation, and IV sedation. With deeper sedation options, you can rest comfortably in a sleep-like state throughout your visit and wake up with little to no memory of the procedure.
What is the difference between a simple extraction and a surgical extraction?
A simple extraction is performed on a tooth that has fully erupted and is clearly visible above the gumline. Our dentists gently loosen the tooth using specialized atraumatic instruments and lift it out intact, requiring minimal post-operative recovery. A surgical extraction is necessary when a tooth has broken off at the gumline, has brittle or curved roots, or remains partially impacted beneath the bone. In a surgical extraction, a tiny incision is made in the gum tissue so the tooth can be gently sectioned and removed safely with minimal trauma to surrounding jawbone.
What is dry socket, and how do I prevent it after an extraction?
Dry socket (alveolar osteitis) is a painful complication that occurs when the protective blood clot that forms in the empty socket becomes dislodged or dissolves prematurely, exposing the underlying bone and nerve endings. To prevent dry socket during your initial 48 to 72 hours of healing: avoid drinking through a straw, do not smoke or vape, refrain from vigorous spitting or swishing, eat soft foods, and avoid strenuous physical exercise. If you suspect you have developed a dry socket, contact our office immediately at (425) 513-2000 so our doctors can place a soothing medicated dressing for rapid relief.
How long is the recovery time after a tooth extraction?
Most patients resume normal non-strenuous daily activities within 24 to 48 hours following a simple extraction, and within 2 to 4 days after a surgical extraction. Mild swelling and tender sensations are normal and easily managed with ice packs and recommended over-the-counter or prescribed medications. The gum tissue over the socket typically heals within 1 to 2 weeks, while the underlying bone socket fully remodels over 2 to 4 months. We provide comprehensive, personalized post-op instructions to ensure your recovery is fast and uncomplicated.
Can I replace my extracted tooth with a dental implant the same day?
Yes, in many eligible cases! When adequate healthy bone volume exists and there is no widespread active infection, our surgical team can perform an immediate dental implant placement directly into the extraction socket during the same surgical appointment. This saves months of healing time and helps preserve your natural facial structure and gum contours. If immediate placement is not advisable, we will place a socket preservation bone graft at the time of extraction to maintain your jawbone density for a future implant.
Does dental insurance cover tooth extractions, and what payment plans are available?
Most dental insurance plans classify tooth extractions as a basic or major restorative medical necessity, typically providing 50% to 80% coverage after your annual deductible. Our insurance specialists will verify your benefits in advance and file claims directly on your behalf to minimize your out-of-pocket costs. For any remaining balances, Sunrise Dental Everett offers flexible monthly financing through CareCredit®, allowing you to pay comfortably over convenient monthly installments.
