Gentle Inhalation Sedation in Everett

What is nitrous oxide (laughing gas)?

Nitrous oxide is a sweet-smelling, colorless blend of nitrous oxide and pure medical oxygen. It is administered through a small, soft silicone nose cushion that rests gently over your nose while you recline comfortably in the dental chair.

As you breathe normally through your nose, the gas enters your system within 2 to 3 minutes, calming the central nervous system, naturally elevating your pain threshold, and inducing a warm, peaceful wave of physical relaxation and mental calm. Unlike deeper sedation methods, you remain 100% awake and able to communicate with our team—and once your procedure is complete, a 3-to-5-minute flush of pure oxygen clears the gas completely from your body so you can safely drive yourself home.

Fast-Acting Nitrous Oxide

Works in 2–3 minutes

No pills to take ahead of time and no needles required. Relaxation begins within a few gentle breaths and can be adjusted moment by moment during your visit.

Awake and in Control

Awake, calm & in control

You breathe naturally on your own, remain fully conscious, and can easily answer questions or let your dentist know how you are feeling at any time.

Zero Hangover Recovery

Drive yourself home

After 3 to 5 minutes of breathing 100% pure oxygen, the sedative effects vanish completely with zero grogginess—no adult escort or recovery day needed.

Child & Adult Comfort

Who benefits most from laughing gas sedation?

Because nitrous oxide is ultra-gentle, non-allergenic, and rapidly reversible, our dentists frequently recommend it for patients who experience:

  • Mild-to-Moderate Dental Anxiety: Melts away physical tension and racing thoughts triggered by dental sights, sounds, or vibrations.
  • Nervous Children & Teens: Helps young patients feel safe, calm, and cooperative during pediatric dental visits without lingering drowsiness.
  • Sensitive Gag Reflex: Relaxes throat and oral reflexes so X-rays, digital scans, and back-molar treatments feel effortless.
  • Fear of Needles or Numbing: Naturally dulls pain receptors so local anesthetic numbing is barely noticeable.
  • Busy Schedules Requiring Zero Downtime: Ideal for adults who cannot take a full day off work or arrange a designated driver.

What happens during a laughing gas appointment?

From the moment you settle into the chair until you walk out the door, nitrous oxide sedation is designed to be effortless, predictable, and tailored to your comfort:

Soft Nasal Cushion Placement

You recline comfortably while we place a lightweight, breathable nose hood gently over your nose—leaving your mouth completely free.

Custom Oxygen-to-Nitrous Blending

We begin with a refreshing flow of pure oxygen and gradually introduce nitrous oxide, fine-tuning the exact percentage to match your comfort needs.

Warm, Soothing Relaxation

As you breathe normally through your nose, a warm, light tingling sensation and a calm sense of detachment wash over you in just minutes.

Gentle, Pain-Free Dental Treatment

Once you are completely relaxed, our dentist numbs the treatment area gently (if needed) and completes your care while monitoring you continuously.

Pure Oxygen Flush & Immediate Recovery

When your procedure finishes, you breathe 100% pure oxygen for 3 to 5 minutes—clearing all nitrous oxide from your lungs so you leave feeling clear-headed and refreshed.

Frequently asked questions

Answers to nitrous oxide (laughing gas) questions

What does nitrous oxide (laughing gas) actually feel like?
Within 2 to 3 minutes of breathing through the soft nasal cushion, most patients feel a warm, soothing wave of relaxation wash over their body. You may notice a pleasant, light tingling sensation in your fingers and toes or a gentle "floating" feeling in the chair. Any nervousness or racing thoughts quickly fade into the background. While some patients feel slightly giggly—which is how "laughing gas" earned its nickname—most simply feel deeply peaceful, comfortable, and unbothered by the dental procedure.
Can I really drive myself home or go back to work after nitrous oxide sedation?
Yes! Unlike oral conscious sedation or IV sedation, nitrous oxide does not linger in your bloodstream. As soon as your dental treatment is complete, we switch your nasal mask to 100% pure medical oxygen for 3 to 5 minutes. This completely flushes the nitrous oxide out of your lungs and body. You will leave our Everett office feeling 100% clear-headed and alert, meaning you can safely drive yourself home, return to work, or send your child back to school right away.
Is nitrous oxide safe for young children during pediatric dental treatments?
Absolutely. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) recognizes nitrous oxide/oxygen inhalation as one of the safest and most effective relaxation methods for children. It is non-allergenic, does not suppress natural breathing or swallowing reflexes, and can be adjusted or turned off instantaneously. Children often love choosing a fun scent for their "astronaut nose mask," and the gentle relaxation helps them build positive, fear-free memories at the dentist.
Will laughing gas put me completely to sleep?
No. Nitrous oxide is a mild conscious sedation method, meaning you remain awake, aware of your surroundings, and able to hear and respond to your dentist throughout the appointment. However, you will feel deeply relaxed and detached from the sights and sounds of treatment. If you have severe dental phobia or prefer to sleep through a complex surgical procedure, our team also offers oral conscious sedation and IV twilight sedation administered by our qualified dental sedation team.
Are there any medical conditions where nitrous oxide is not recommended?
While nitrous oxide is exceptionally safe for the vast majority of children and adults, there are a few situations where we recommend postponing or choosing an alternative:
  • Severe Nasal Congestion: Because you must breathe through your nose for the gas to work, a heavy cold, sinus infection, or blocked nasal passage will prevent effective inhalation.
  • Pregnancy: Elective nitrous oxide sedation is generally avoided during pregnancy, particularly during the first trimester.
  • Certain Respiratory or Medical Conditions: Patients with severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), recent inner-ear or retinal surgery, or vitamin B12 / MTHFR deficiency should consult with our dentists during their medical history review.
Should I eat or drink before a dental appointment with nitrous oxide?
Unlike IV sedation, strict overnight fasting is not required for nitrous oxide. However, we recommend eating only a light, easily digestible meal (such as toast, yogurt, or oatmeal) 2 hours before your appointment and avoiding heavy, greasy, or large meals right before treatment, as a very full stomach can occasionally cause mild nausea while breathing nitrous oxide.
