For patients with severe dental anxiety or those completing bigger procedures like full-arch dental implants or wisdom teeth removal, IV sedation lets you drift into a deep, peaceful state of relaxation. You’ll be closely monitored the entire time, and most patients finish their appointment with little to no memory of the procedure.
What is intravenous (IV) sedation?
Intravenous (IV) sedation—often referred to as "twilight sleep" or sleep dentistry—delivers carefully titrated anti-anxiety and sedative medications directly into the bloodstream through a tiny, comfortable intravenous line placed in your arm or hand.
Because the medication bypasses the digestive system, it takes effect within seconds rather than an hour. Unlike a fixed-dose oral pill, IV sedation allows our qualified dental sedation team to finely adjust the exact depth of your sedation moment by moment throughout your procedure. You drift into a peaceful, dreamless twilight state while continuing to breathe independently—and when your treatment is finished, you wake up smoothly with zero memory of the sights, sounds, vibrations, or passage of time.
Instant, titratable control
Takes effect in seconds and can be deepened or lightened continuously in real time to match the exact length and complexity of your procedure.
Dedicated sedation safety
Administered and closely monitored by our qualified dental sedation team with continuous hospital-grade EKG, CO₂, oxygen, and blood pressure monitoring.
Complete twilight amnesia
You sleep peacefully through numbing injections, surgical sounds, and hours of treatment, waking up feeling as though only a few moments have passed.
Because IV twilight sedation eliminates physical fatigue, gag reflexes, and time awareness, our surgical and restorative team in Everett can safely consolidate multiple complex treatments—such as surgical extractions, bone grafting, sinus lifts, dental implants, root canals, and crowns—into a single, seamless appointment rather than requiring half a dozen separate visits.
We believe everyone deserves access to fear-free dentistry. Sunrise Dental Everett accepts most major PPO dental insurance plans and offers flexible monthly payment plans through CareCredit. Before your procedure, our treatment coordinators provide a transparent, itemized overview of your insurance coverage and IV sedation investment.

Who is an ideal candidate for IV sedation?
Our dentists and qualified dental sedation team recommend IV sedation for patients who desire complete detachment from their dental procedure:
- Severe Dental Phobia & Panic Attacks: Ideal if severe fear has kept you away from the dentist for years and you want to sleep peacefully through your entire visit.
- Complex Implant & Oral Surgery: The gold standard for All-on-X / Full-Arch Implants, Teeth-In-A-Day, impacted wisdom teeth, bone grafting, and sinus lifts.
- Full Mouth Reconstruction: Complete hours of intricate restorative or surgical treatment in one appointment without jaw joint soreness or restlessness.
- Extreme Gag Reflex: Completely quiets pharyngeal gag reflexes so impressions, scans, and posterior molar work can be performed effortlessly.
- Resistance to Local Anesthesia or Past Oral Sedation: Because IV medication is titrated directly into the bloodstream, it works reliably even if oral pills were not strong enough in the past.
What to expect with IV twilight sedation
Every IV sedation appointment at Sunrise Dental Everett follows strict hospital-grade safety protocols led by our dentists and qualified dental sedation team:
Before your procedure date, our clinical team reviews your health history, airway anatomy, current medications, and treatment plan to design a personalized IV sedation protocol.
You will fast from food and liquids for 8 hours prior to your appointment (following your specific written instructions) and arrive with a trusted adult driver in loose, comfortable clothing.
Once you are settled under a warm blanket—with optional laughing gas if you are nervous about the IV pinch—our sedation team places a tiny IV line and you drift into peaceful twilight sleep within seconds.
Only after you are deeply asleep does our dentist numb the treatment area. Throughout your procedure, our qualified sedation team remains right by your side tracking your EKG, blood pressure, heart rate, pulse oximetry, and breathing.
As soon as treatment concludes, the IV medication is stopped and you wake up smoothly with no memory of the procedure. After a brief monitored recovery, your adult companion drives you home to rest.
